Longitudinal or transverse: the first question
Land Rover gearboxes split into two groups that never swap with each other. The classic Defender, Discovery 3 and 4, Range Rover Sport L320 and L322 Range Rover mount the gearbox lengthways behind the engine, where it feeds a separate two-speed transfer box. The Freelander 2, Evoque and Discovery Sport turn the engine and gearbox sideways, which is why their Aisin six-speed and ZF nine-speed automatics cannot stand in for the ZF units in a Discovery 4.
Within each group the year matters as much as the model. A Discovery 4 SDV6 from 2012 onwards can carry the ZF 8HP70 eight-speed, while earlier examples use the six-speed 6HP26 or 6HP28. On the manual side, the R380 five-speed served the 300Tdi and Td5 Defender, and the six-speed MT82 arrived in 2007 alongside the Puma diesel.
