Understanding Transfer Case Parts
The transfer case sends drive to both axles and, on many Land Rovers, provides a low-range gear set. Classic Defenders and Discovery 1 and 2 use the gear-driven LT230 transfer case, operated by a lever. Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and many Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models use a two-speed transfer case with an electric range-change motor and an electronically controlled centre differential lock. Freelander 2, Evoque and Discovery Sport have no conventional transfer case; they use a front power take-off unit and a Haldex-type coupling at the rear axle.
Common transfer case parts include range-change motors, output seals, bearings, chains, and the coupling pumps and filters on Haldex-type systems.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover transfer case parts
Why won't my Discovery 3 or 4 select low range?
Common causes include a failing range-change motor, a motor position sensor fault, low battery voltage or not following the selection procedure, which usually needs the vehicle stationary or rolling slowly in neutral. Read the fault codes before replacing the motor.
What is the LT230 transfer case?
It is the two-speed, gear-driven transfer case used in classic Defenders and Discovery 1 and 2, with a centre differential that can be locked by the driver for low-grip conditions. It is known for being tough, but its output seals and bearings wear, and the centre diff lock must be released on high-grip surfaces.
How do I look after the Haldex coupling on a Freelander 2 or Evoque?
Follow the service schedule for the coupling fluid and filter where specified. A blocked filter or failed pump is a common reason for loss of four-wheel drive. Also keep all four tyres matched in size and wear.
Why do mismatched tyres matter on a Land Rover?
Different tyre sizes or very uneven wear make the axles turn at different speeds. This loads centre differentials, viscous couplings and Haldex-type couplings and can damage them. Replace tyres as a set, or at least in matched pairs, to the same size.
