Parts commonly needed for the Discovery 4

Parts commonly needed on the Discovery 4 include air suspension components (compressors, air springs, valve blocks, height sensors), timing belt kits for the 3.0 diesel, intake manifolds, EGR valves, turbochargers and mass air flow sensors. Front lower arms, anti-roll bar bushes and electronic handbrake actuators follow. Replacement engines are often needed after crankshaft or timing failures. Always give the VIN and say whether it is a TDV6 or SDV6. Owners planning ahead also order front and rear differential parts and suspension bushes at the same time as a timing belt service, because the vehicle is already in the workshop and labour on this model is expensive.

About the Discovery 4

The Discovery 4 went on sale in South Africa in late 2009 and stayed until 2017, so there are many on the used market. It keeps the Discovery 3's body-frame and air suspension layout but adds a new interior and, importantly, new engines: the 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 diesels, the SDV6 using twin sequential turbochargers. The SDV6 is the version most buyers meet today, including the late Graphite and Landmark editions. It is a comfortable, capable vehicle, but it has an equally well-known reputation for expensive faults. A cars.co.za used buyer's guide lists air suspension and handbrake issues, a cracked intake manifold, EGR problems and mass air flow sensor faults, and stresses the importance of the cambelt service. Diesel V6 engines built before 2012 are also affected by the crankshaft bearing concern reported locally in 2015. For a parts buyer that means two kinds of order: planned maintenance, such as timing belt kits and suspension arms, and fault-driven repairs on the air suspension and diesel intake system. Send us your VIN and engine code, because TDV6 and SDV6 intake, turbo and injection parts are not always the same.

Discovery 4 engines

Engine parts are rarely shared between these units, so quote the engine code or number with every engine-related enquiry.

Engine Code / family Fuel
3.0 TDV6 turbodiesel TDV6 Diesel
3.0 SDV6 twin-turbodiesel SDV6 Diesel

Known Discovery 4 problems

The faults owners and specialists report most often on this generation, and where to look for the parts involved.

Air suspension and electronic handbrake faults

The cars.co.za Discovery 4 buyer's guide names air suspension and handbrake issues among the model's known problems. Air suspension warnings usually trace to compressors, valve blocks, air springs or height sensors.

Electronic Parking Brake

Cracked intake manifold

The 3.0 V6 diesel uses a plastic intake manifold that can crack, triggering a restricted performance warning, particularly under load.

Engine Parts

EGR and mass air flow sensor faults

EGR system problems and mass air flow sensor failures are listed in the local buyer's guide and show up as poor running, loss of power and warning lights.

EGR Valve

Crankshaft bearing concern on pre-2012 diesels

Jaguar Land Rover South Africa confirmed in 2015 that V6 diesels built before 2012, including the Discovery 4, could suffer main bearing failure. It said engines built from 2012 use a new bearing design; that is the manufacturer’s statement, not a guarantee for any individual engine, so check the build date and service history.

Engines for sale

Timing belt service is critical

The 3.0 V6 diesel uses a timing belt. If it is not replaced on schedule and snaps, the pistons can hit the valves and the engine is badly damaged.

Timing Belts

Front lower arm bushes

Worn front lower arm bushes cause knocking at low speed and uneven tyre wear, and specialists list them among their most frequent suspension repairs on the Discovery 3 and 4.

Control Arms

Keeping a Discovery 4 running

The Discovery 4's 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 diesels use a timing belt, and that belt service is one of the most important jobs on the vehicle. Watch for a restricted performance warning, which can point to a cracked plastic intake manifold, EGR faults or a failing mass air flow sensor. The air suspension and electronic handbrake are known trouble spots, and front lower arm bushes wear. Pre-2012 diesels are affected by the crankshaft bearing concern Jaguar Land Rover South Africa confirmed in 2015.

Discovery 4 questions

What goes wrong on a used Discovery 4?

A cars.co.za buyer's guide lists air suspension and handbrake issues, a cracked intake manifold, exhaust gas recirculation problems and mass air flow sensor faults, and stresses the importance of the cambelt service. Diesel engines built before 2012 can also be affected by crankshaft main bearing failure.

Do Discovery 3 parts fit a Discovery 4?

Some do, because the two share the same basic body-frame and air suspension layout, but the Discovery 4 introduced different engines (the 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6, although some early Discovery 4s in other markets kept the 2.7 TDV6) and many engine, intake and electrical parts changed. Give us your VIN so we can confirm fitment before you order.
