Understanding Fuel Tanks

The fuel tank stores fuel and houses the in-tank pump and fuel level sender on most Land Rovers. Tanks are plastic or steel depending on the model, and on classic Defenders the position of the tank depends on wheelbase and year.

Tanks can be damaged off-road, steel tanks rust, and filler necks and breather pipes crack with age. Long-range auxiliary tanks are popular on overland vehicles, but they must be installed correctly and safely.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover fuel tanks

Why is my fuel gauge inaccurate?

The fuel level sender in the tank is the usual cause. On some models the sender is part of the in-tank pump assembly. Check the wiring and connector before replacing it.

Why does the pump nozzle keep clicking off when I fill up?

A blocked or kinked breather pipe or a damaged filler neck stops air escaping from the tank. Inspect the breather and filler neck.

Should I fit a tank guard?

If you drive rocky trails, a tank guard protects the tank from impacts. Make sure it allows drainage and access to fittings.

What should I send to order a fuel tank?

The VIN, engine (petrol or diesel) and, for Defenders, the wheelbase and tank position.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
