Understanding Springs
Coil springs carry the weight of the vehicle and set its ride height. Classic Defenders, Discovery 1 and 2 and the older Range Rover use long-travel coil springs, which are a large part of their off-road ability. Freelanders, Evoques and Discovery Sports use coils on struts.
Springs sag with age and load, and heavy touring equipment such as roof racks, fridges, water tanks and drawers can push a standard spring beyond what it was designed for. Uprated springs are available for vehicles that permanently carry extra weight or tow.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover springs
What spring rate should I choose for a loaded Defender?
Choose based on the weight you carry most of the time, not just the heaviest trip. A spring that is too stiff for a lightly loaded vehicle rides harshly, while one that is too soft sags under a full load. Weigh the vehicle as you normally drive it and ask for springs matched to that.
Should I replace springs in pairs?
Yes. A new spring on one side and an old one on the other will leave the vehicle leaning. Replace both springs on the axle.
Will lifting my Land Rover affect anything else?
A lift changes geometry and can affect the propshafts, brake hoses, steering, headlight aim and handling. Longer shocks and hoses are often needed. Check what your insurer requires to be declared.
Can I fit coil springs to an air-suspension Land Rover?
Air-to-coil conversion kits exist for some models. They remove the air suspension's height adjustment and may need the vehicle's settings recoded to avoid warning lights. See the coilovers and air suspension categories for more.
