Understanding Water Pumps

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine, radiator and heater. It is driven by the auxiliary belt or timing belt on most engines, and some newer engines use electric or switchable pumps. Many Land Rovers also have an auxiliary electric pump to circulate coolant through the heater or turbo after the engine stops.

Water pumps fail through worn seals and bearings. On engines where the pump is driven by the timing belt, it is usually replaced with the timing belt kit.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover water pumps

Should I replace the water pump with the timing belt?

If your engine's water pump is driven by the timing belt, yes. Replacing it later means paying for the same labour again, and a pump failure can damage the new belt.

What is an auxiliary water pump?

A small electric pump that helps circulate coolant, for example through the heater or around the turbo after the engine is switched off. When it fails, you may see a fault message or have poor heater performance.

Can a leaking water pump be driven on?

A slight weep can progress quickly to a major leak and overheating, and a failing bearing can destroy the belt. Replace it promptly.

What should I send to order a water pump?

The VIN and engine code, and whether you need the main or an auxiliary pump.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
