One badge, several very different motors
A Land Rover name tells you surprisingly little about what sits under the bonnet. A diesel Discovery 3 left the factory with the 2.7 TDV6, while the near-identical Discovery 4 sold here uses the 3.0-litre 306DT, sold both as a single-turbo TDV6 and as the twin-turbo SDV6. The Freelander 2 and early Evoque shared the transverse 2.2 TD4/SD4 (224DT), and newer Evoques, Discovery Sports, Velars and the L663 Defender use the aluminium 2.0 Ingenium diesel.
Older vehicles add their own traps. The five-cylinder Td5 in the classic Defender and Discovery 2 came as 10P, 15P and 16P engines, and early examples used plastic dowels to locate the cylinder head, which can break and let the head move. That is why every quote on this page starts with the engine code, not the model name.
