Understanding Clutch Disc

The clutch disc, or clutch plate, is the friction disc between the flywheel and pressure plate in a manual gearbox. Manual Land Rovers include classic Defenders, many Discovery 1 and 2 models, Freelanders and some Evoques and Discovery Sports.

Towing, off-road driving and riding the clutch all shorten clutch life. A Land Rover clutch is normally replaced as a kit with the pressure plate and release bearing.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover clutch disc

Should I replace the whole clutch kit or just the plate?

Replace the full kit: clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing. Most of the cost is labour, so fitting only a plate risks paying for the job twice.

Should I replace the flywheel with the clutch?

Check it. A dual-mass flywheel with excessive play or noise, or a solid flywheel that is scored or heat-marked, should be replaced or skimmed at the same time.

How can I make my clutch last longer?

Use low range for slow off-road work and for reversing heavy trailers or boats, avoid holding the vehicle on the clutch on slopes, and do not rest your foot on the pedal.

What should I send to order a clutch kit?

The VIN, engine code and gearbox type. Clutch sizes differ between engines on the same model.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
