Parts commonly needed for the Range Rover Velar

Velar owners most often need timing chain kits and turbochargers for the 2.0 diesel, throttle bodies, inlet manifolds and timing belt kits for the 3.0 diesel, and DPF, NOx sensor and AdBlue parts for both. Door handle mechanisms and door locks are a Velar-specific common repair. Brake pads and discs, LED lights and front-end body parts round out the list. Give us your VIN and engine designation, because the Velar was sold with many different engines. Owners of late vehicles with the AJ20-D6 diesel should confirm with a dealer whether the idler pulley recall has been done before ordering oil pressure sensors or chasing an oil leak, because that repair is free.

About the Range Rover Velar

The Range Rover Velar went on sale in South Africa in October 2017, slotting between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. The local launch range was unusually broad: 2.0 turbodiesels in 132kW D180 and 177kW D240 form, a 221kW 3.0 V6 D300 diesel, 2.0 turbo petrols as the 184kW P250 and 221kW P300, and a 280kW supercharged V6 P380, all with an eight-speed ZF automatic and all-wheel drive. The range has since been updated with newer diesel and plug-in hybrid options. With so many engines, the Velar is a model where the first question on any parts enquiry is the engine designation. The 2.0 diesels share the Ingenium engine's known timing chain, turbocharger and piston cooling jet solenoid problems, while the 3.0 V6 diesel shares the JLR V6 diesel family's clogged throttle bodies, cracked plastic inlet manifolds and timing belt service. All diesels carry diesel particulate filters and AdBlue systems. The Velar's flush, pop-out door handles and door locks are also a known source of repair work. Late models with the AJ20-D6 diesel are included in a 2026 NCC-published recall that dealers fix free of charge. Send us your VIN and the engine designation from your badge or licence document before ordering.

Range Rover Velar engines

Engine parts are rarely shared between these units, so quote the engine code or number with every engine-related enquiry.

Engine Code / family Fuel
D180 / D240 2.0 turbodiesel Ingenium Diesel
D300 3.0 V6 turbodiesel — Diesel
P250 / P300 2.0 turbo petrol Ingenium Petrol
P380 3.0 supercharged V6 petrol — Petrol

Known Range Rover Velar problems

The faults owners and specialists report most often on this generation, and where to look for the parts involved.

2.0 diesel timing chain failure

Independent JLR specialists list timing chain failure among common Velar problems on the 2.0 diesel, linked to oil dilution and chain guide wear.

Timing Chains

Turbo failure on diesel models

Turbocharger failure is a documented fault on diesel Velars, with loss of power and an engine warning light.

Turbochargers for sale

3.0 diesel throttle body and inlet manifold

Three-litre diesel Velars are known to suffer clogged throttle bodies and cracked brittle-plastic inlet manifolds, both triggering restricted performance messages.

Engine Parts

AdBlue system faults

Diesel Velars use SCR with AdBlue. Running out stops the car starting, and overfilling can damage internal sensors.

Exhaust

Door handles and door locks

Stuck pop-out door handles and failed door locks appear on specialist common-fault lists for the Velar.

Body Parts

AJ20-D6 idler pulley recall on late models

An NCC-published recall covers selected Velars sold from March 2024 to April 2026 with the AJ20-D6 engine, where the auxiliary belt idler pulley can damage the oil pressure sensor. Dealers repair it free.

Recall work is carried out free by Land Rover dealers. Check your VIN with a dealer before buying parts for this.

Keeping a Range Rover Velar running

Velar maintenance depends heavily on the engine. The 2.0 diesels need clean, correct oil to protect their timing chains and turbochargers. The 3.0 V6 diesel uses a timing belt that must be replaced on schedule, and its throttle body and plastic inlet manifold can cause restricted performance warnings. All diesels use a DPF and AdBlue. Stuck door handles and failed door locks are a known Velar repair, and late AJ20-D6 diesels are covered by a free dealer recall.

Range Rover Velar questions

Which engines were sold in the Range Rover Velar in South Africa?

The October 2017 local launch range included 2.0 diesels in D180 (132kW) and D240 (177kW) form, a 3.0 V6 D300 diesel (221kW), 2.0 petrols as the P250 (184kW) and P300 (221kW), and the 3.0 supercharged P380 (280kW), all with an eight-speed ZF automatic and all-wheel drive. Later updates changed the line-up.

Why won't my Velar door handles pop out?

The Velar's flush, deploying door handles and their door lock mechanisms are a known repair item on specialist common-fault lists. The fault can be in the handle mechanism or the latch, so a diagnosis before ordering parts avoids buying the wrong component.
