Understanding Engine Parts

Land Rover engine parts cover everything from the rotating assembly (crankshaft, rods, pistons) to the cylinder head, timing drive, filters and sensors. Land Rover has used a wide spread of engines in South Africa: the 300Tdi and Td5 in classic Defenders and early Discoverys, the Ford-sourced 2.2 and 2.4 Puma diesels in later Defenders, the 2.7 and 3.0 V6 diesels (TDV6 and SDV6) in Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport, the 4.4 SDV8 in Range Rover, and the four-cylinder Ingenium engines in Evoque, Velar, Discovery Sport, Discovery 5 and the new Defender.

Because the same model can carry very different engines, the engine code matters more than the model name when you order. Your VIN, the engine number stamped on the block, or the original part number on the old component is the safest way to get the right part first time.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover engine parts

How do I know which engine my Land Rover has?

Start with the VIN on your licence disc and in the windscreen corner. The vehicle's registration papers, the service book and the engine number stamped on the block also identify it. Model names alone are not enough: a Discovery 4, for example, came with different diesel and petrol engines, and a Defender could have a 300Tdi, Td5 or Puma diesel depending on its year. Send the VIN with your quote request so the part can be matched to the engine code.

Should I repair my Land Rover engine or replace it with a complete unit?

It depends on what failed. A leaking gasket, a worn timing kit or a faulty injector is a repair job. Bottom-end damage, such as a spun bearing or a broken crankshaft on a V6 diesel, often makes a complete replacement engine more practical than a rebuild, because the block, crank and turbo may all need attention. Get a proper diagnosis first, then compare the cost of a rebuild kit plus machining against a complete engine.

Which Land Rover engines use a timing belt and which use a chain?

As a general guide, the 300Tdi and the 2.7 and 3.0 V6 diesels (TDV6 and SDV6) use timing belts, while the Td5, the Defender Puma diesels and the Ingenium engines use timing chains. Confirm against your engine code before buying, because a belt engine has a replacement schedule you must keep to, and a chain engine still needs its tensioners and guides checked if it starts to rattle.

Why is regular oil servicing so important on Land Rover diesels?

Turbocharged diesels load their bearings, turbo and timing components heavily, and dirty or diluted oil speeds up wear. Models with a diesel particulate filter can also see fuel dilution of the oil if regeneration keeps getting interrupted by short trips. Use the oil specification in your owner's handbook, change the filter every time, and shorten the interval if you tow, drive on dusty gravel roads or do mostly short runs.

What information should I send when asking for Land Rover engine parts?

Send the VIN, the model and year, the engine code or engine number, and a photo of the old part with any part number visible. Say whether you want a new, used or reconditioned part. With those details the part can be checked for fit before it is couriered to you.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
