Understanding Thermostats

The thermostat controls coolant flow to the radiator. It stays closed while the engine warms up, then opens to keep the engine at its working temperature. On many Land Rover engines the thermostat sits in a plastic housing, which can crack or warp.

A thermostat stuck closed causes overheating. One stuck open makes the engine run cold, which increases fuel consumption, wear and, on diesels, the soot that loads the DPF.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover thermostats

How do I know if my thermostat is stuck open?

If the temperature gauge stays low on a highway drive, or the heater never gets properly hot, the thermostat may be stuck open. A diagnostic tool can show the actual coolant temperature.

Should I replace the thermostat housing as well?

If the housing is plastic and shows signs of age, cracking or seepage, replace it at the same time. Old plastic housings often crack when disturbed.

Can I run my Land Rover without a thermostat?

No. The engine will run too cold, which increases wear and fuel use, and modern engine management may log faults.

What should I send to order a thermostat?

The VIN and engine code. Some engines use more than one thermostat.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
