Parts commonly needed for the Discovery 3

On the Discovery 3, air suspension parts lead the list: air springs, compressors, valve blocks and height sensors, plus front and rear suspension arms. TDV6 owners regularly need EGR valves, intercooler hoses, turbochargers and cooling parts, and a TDV6 with a failed bottom end often becomes a replacement engine enquiry. Electronic handbrake components and brake parts are also common. Specify air or steel suspension, engine and VIN, as some Discovery 4 parts look similar but will not fit. Rear differentials and front differentials are also requested on higher-mileage vehicles that have towed or done a lot of gravel driving, and a whine or drone at constant speed is usually the first warning.

About the Discovery 3

The Discovery 3 changed the Discovery completely when it reached South Africa in 2005. It moved to independent suspension, a stiff integrated body-frame, Terrain Response and, on most versions, all-round height-adjustable air suspension. Local buyers could choose the 2.7 TDV6 turbodiesel or V6 and V8 petrol engines, and TDV6 automatics make up much of the used market today. The TDV6 is also the engine with the most serious known weakness. Land Rover V6 diesels built before 2012, including the Discovery 3, can suffer crankshaft main bearing failures, and a 2015 IOL report described a South African owner being quoted R260,000 to repair a 2008 Discovery 3 with 132,000km on the clock. The good news is that the petrol engines are regarded as robust, and the gearbox, body and electronics are generally reliable. For parts buyers the Discovery 3 is a suspension and engine-ancillary vehicle: air springs, compressors, front lower arms, EGR valves and intercooler hoses are common replacements. Tell us your engine, whether you have air or steel springs, and your VIN, because Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 parts look alike but do not always interchange.

Known Discovery 3 problems

The faults owners and specialists report most often on this generation, and where to look for the parts involved.

TDV6 crankshaft main bearing failure

Land Rover V6 diesels made before 2012 can suffer crankshaft main bearing failure. In a 2015 IOL report Jaguar Land Rover South Africa confirmed the Discovery 3 was among the affected models, and one owner was quoted R260,000 to repair a 2008 Discovery 3.

Air suspension compressor and air springs

The air springs develop cracks and tears with age, and the leaks overwork the compressor until it fails. The air springs themselves are relatively cheap to replace.

Air Suspension Compressors

EGR valve failure

Soot build-up stops the EGR valves working, causing black smoke, loss of power and high fuel use. There are two valves and they usually fail within a short distance of each other.

EGR Valve

Split main intercooler hose

A split in the large intercooler hose on the TDV6 loses boost pressure and puts the vehicle into restricted performance, usually with black smoke. Oil on the outside of the hose is a clue.

Engine Parts

Front lower suspension arm bushes

Worn bushes cause a clonk from the front when braking at low speed. Replacing the complete arm and doing a four-wheel alignment is the standard fix.

Control Arms

Rear differential bearing noise

A drone or whine at constant speed can come from dry differential bearings. Silver particles in the drained oil mean the diff is wearing.

Keeping a Discovery 3 running

On the Discovery 3, the 2.7 TDV6 diesel deserves the closest attention. Keep oil changes on time, investigate any bottom-end noise early, and inspect the intercooler hoses and both EGR valves when power drops. The all-round air suspension needs its air springs, compressor, valve block and height sensors checked, and front lower suspension arm bushes wear and cause clonks under braking. Listen for a drone from the rear differential at constant speed, and check the diff oil for metal particles.

Discovery 3 questions

What is the Discovery 3 TDV6 crankshaft problem?

Land Rover V6 diesel engines built before 2012, including the Discovery 3, can suffer crankshaft main bearing failure. In a 2015 IOL report Jaguar Land Rover South Africa confirmed the Discovery 3 was among the affected models, and one owner was quoted R260,000 to repair a 2008 Discovery 3. JLR South Africa said engines built from 2012 use a new bearing design, but that is the manufacturer’s statement, not a guarantee for any individual engine.

Is a Discovery 3 petrol more reliable than the diesel?

Local buying advice on AutoTrader describes the V6 and V8 petrol engines as quite robust, though not cheap to repair, while the 2.7 TDV6 diesel is known for serious issues including crankshaft or oil pump problems and premature turbo failure. The gearbox, body and electronics are regarded as fairly problem-free on all versions.
