Parts commonly needed for the Defender (L663)

L663 owners outside warranty mainly look for service parts (filters, brake pads and discs), suspension and wheel-related components, lighting and body panels after off-road or accident damage. Diesel owners of the 2.0 D240 should budget for timing chain work at higher mileage. Parts differ between the four-cylinder, six-cylinder diesel and petrol hybrid engines, and between the 90, 110 and 130 bodies, so give us your VIN. Check open recalls with a dealer first, because that work costs you nothing. Owners who use their Defender for overlanding also ask about underbody protection, wheels and suspension components after trail damage, while town-based diesel owners are more likely to need DPF and emissions-related parts.

About the Defender (L663)

The L663 Defender arrived in South Africa in mid-2020 and shares little beyond its name with the classic model. It uses an aluminium monocoque body instead of a separate chassis, independent suspension, and all local derivatives are automatic with all-wheel drive. The launch range offered the D240 2.0 turbodiesel, the P300 2.0 turbo petrol and the P400 3.0 six-cylinder mild hybrid across the 90 and 110 body styles. The eight-seat Defender 130 followed at the end of 2022 with the D300 3.0 diesel and the P400. That spread matters for parts: a 2.0 Ingenium diesel, a 3.0 six-cylinder diesel and a 3.0 petrol hybrid need different filters, belts, sensors and service items, and body-dependent parts differ between the 90, 110 and 130. Many of these vehicles are now leaving their maintenance plans, so owners are starting to look outside the dealer network for service parts, brake components, tyres-and-wheel related parts and accident repairs. This model is also covered by several South African product recalls, which are handled free at Land Rover dealers, so check your VIN with a dealer before paying for a repair that could be recall work. For everything else, send us your VIN and we will confirm fitment.

Known Defender (L663) problems

The faults owners and specialists report most often on this generation, and where to look for the parts involved.

2.0 Ingenium diesel timing chain wear

Independent JLR specialists report premature timing chain stretch on the 2.0 Ingenium diesel across models including the Defender, linked to oil dilution from incomplete DPF regenerations. A cold-start rattle is the early symptom.

Timing Chains

AJ20-D6 idler pulley recall

A 2026 NCC-published recall covers selected Defenders sold from March 2024 to April 2026: the auxiliary drive belt idler pulley can over-rotate and damage the oil pressure and temperature sensor, causing an oil leak. Dealers replace the pulley free of charge.

Recall work is carried out free by Land Rover dealers. Check your VIN with a dealer before buying parts for this.

Driver airbag clockspring connector recall

A recall published by the NCC in June 2026 covers selected Defenders sold from April 2019 to June 2026, where fretting corrosion at the airbag connector on the clockspring can stop the driver airbag deploying. Inspection and repair are free at dealers.

Recall work is carried out free by Land Rover dealers. Check your VIN with a dealer before buying parts for this.

Keeping a Defender (L663) running

The L663 Defender is a modern, electronically managed vehicle, so most maintenance follows the service schedule for its engine. The 2.0 Ingenium D240 diesel relies on clean, correct-specification oil to protect its timing chains, and regular longer drives help the diesel particulate filter regenerate. The six-cylinder D300 and P400 need their own filters and service parts. Check with a Land Rover dealer for open South African recalls, including the driver airbag clockspring connector and, on later AJ20-D6 diesels, the auxiliary belt idler pulley, because recall work is free.

Defender (L663) questions

What engines does the new Defender have in South Africa?

The 2020 South African launch range offered the D240 2.0 four-cylinder diesel (177kW), the P300 2.0 petrol (221kW) and the P400 3.0 six-cylinder petrol (294kW), all with automatic gearboxes and all-wheel drive. The Defender 130 arrived at the end of 2022 with the D300 3.0 diesel (221kW) and the P400.

Is my Defender affected by a recall?

Jaguar Land Rover South Africa has notified the National Consumer Commission of recalls affecting selected Defenders, including a driver airbag clockspring connector concern (vehicles sold from April 2019 to June 2026) and an idler pulley concern on certain AJ20-D6 engines (vehicles sold from March 2024 to April 2026). A Land Rover dealer can check your VIN; recall repairs are free.
