Understanding Starter
The starter motor turns the engine over until it fires. A solenoid engages the starter's drive gear with the flywheel ring gear and switches the heavy current from the battery.
On Land Rovers, starters can suffer from water and mud during crossings and from heat near the exhaust. Diesels need a strong starter because of their high compression, so a starter that is getting weak shows up first on cold mornings.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover starter
Is it the battery or the starter motor?
Test the battery first. If the battery is fully charged and the terminals are clean and tight, but the engine still only clicks or cranks slowly, the starter or its cables are the likely cause. Check the main earth strap as well.
Why is my Land Rover starter grinding?
Grinding usually means the drive gear is not engaging cleanly with the flywheel ring gear. It can be the starter drive, the solenoid or worn teeth on the ring gear. Check the ring gear when the starter is removed.
Does the starter differ between manual and automatic Land Rovers?
It can. The starter may differ with the gearbox type, and on some models with engine or equipment changes. Send the VIN and say whether the vehicle is manual or automatic.
Should I choose a new or remanufactured starter?
A remanufactured starter with new brushes, bushes and solenoid contacts is a reliable, cost-effective option. Make sure the mounting and number of teeth on the drive gear match your original.
