Know the part
Understanding Fuel System
The fuel system stores fuel and delivers it to the engine at the right pressure. On diesel Land Rovers this includes the tank, in-tank or lift pump, fuel filter, high-pressure pump and injectors. The designs vary: the 300Tdi uses a mechanical injection pump, the Td5 uses unit injectors fed by an in-tank pump, and the V6 diesels and Ingenium engines use high-pressure common-rail systems.
Modern diesel injection systems are very sensitive to water and dirt in the fuel. Filling up at busy, reputable stations and changing the fuel filter on time protects expensive injectors and pumps.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover fuel system
What should I do if I put petrol in my diesel Land Rover?
Do not start the engine. If you have already driven, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Have the tank drained and the system flushed. Running a modern diesel on petrol can damage the high-pressure pump and injectors.
How do I bleed air out of my diesel fuel system?
Many modern Land Rovers bleed themselves when the ignition is cycled several times. Older engines may need manual priming. Follow the procedure for your engine, and fix the cause of the air leak.
Can bad fuel damage my Land Rover diesel?
Yes. Water and contamination can damage high-pressure pumps and injectors. If you suspect bad fuel, drain the water trap and change the filter promptly.
What should I send to order fuel system parts?
The VIN, engine code and a photo of the part with any numbers visible.
