Understanding Catalytic Converter
A catalytic converter uses precious-metal coatings to turn harmful exhaust gases into less harmful ones. Petrol Land Rovers have catalytic converters close to the engine, and diesels use an oxidation catalyst, often combined with or next to the diesel particulate filter.
Catalytic converters can fail from contamination, overheating from misfires, or physical damage off-road. Because of the valuable metals inside them, catalytic converter theft has been widely reported in South Africa.

Common Questions About Land Rover catalytic converter
What damages a catalytic converter?
Misfires sending unburnt fuel into the exhaust, oil or coolant burning in the engine, and impacts off-road are common causes. Fix the root cause before fitting a new converter, or it can fail again.
Can I drive without a catalytic converter?
The vehicle will usually run, but it will be louder, produce more harmful emissions and show warning lights. Removing emissions equipment is not a proper repair, so replace a stolen or failed converter.
Is an aftermarket catalytic converter suitable?
A good-quality converter made for your engine can work well. Make sure it fits the original sensor positions and suits the engine's emission standard, or warning lights may return.
What information do I need to order a catalytic converter?
The VIN and engine code. Converters differ by engine, emission standard and sometimes by position on V6 and V8 engines.
