Understanding Exhaust Manifold
The exhaust manifold collects exhaust gases from each cylinder and feeds them to the turbocharger or the front pipe. It is bolted to the cylinder head with a gasket and gets extremely hot, which over time can crack the manifold or break its studs.
On Land Rover diesels, a leaking manifold or gasket often shows up as a ticking noise under load and a loss of turbo boost, because exhaust gas escapes before it reaches the turbo.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover exhaust manifold
Why do exhaust manifold studs break?
Heat cycling makes the studs expand and contract, and corrosion seizes them. When they are finally disturbed, they often snap. Use penetrating oil in advance and work carefully, and replace the studs and nuts when fitting a new manifold or gasket.
Can a cracked exhaust manifold be welded?
Cast manifolds are difficult to weld reliably because of the heat they endure. A replacement manifold is usually the better long-term repair.
Does a manifold leak affect the turbo?
Yes. Exhaust gas that escapes before the turbo reduces the energy available to spin it, so boost and power drop. It can also let hot gas damage nearby wiring and hoses.
What should I replace with an exhaust manifold?
New gaskets, studs and nuts, and the turbo-to-manifold gasket if the turbo is removed. Check any heat shields and the EGR connections at the same time.
