Understanding Transmission

A Land Rover drivetrain is more complex than a normal car's because it drives all four wheels. It includes the gearbox, a transfer case or coupling that splits drive between the axles, front and rear differentials, propshafts and driveshafts. Classic Defenders and Discovery 1 and 2 use a manual or automatic gearbox with the LT230 two-speed transfer case. Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and the first Range Rover Sport use ZF automatics with an electronically controlled transfer case, usually two-speed. Freelander 2, Evoque and Discovery Sport use a transverse gearbox with an electronically controlled rear coupling such as Haldex.

Knowing which of these layouts your vehicle has is essential before buying any drivetrain part.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover transmission

Do Land Rover automatic gearboxes need fluid changes?

Some automatic gearboxes were described as filled for life, but many transmission specialists recommend changing the fluid and filter, particularly on vehicles that tow, off-road or operate in heat. Use only the fluid specified for your gearbox.

What does a transfer case do?

It splits drive between the front and rear axles. On models with a two-speed transfer case, it also provides a low-range gear set for steep terrain, towing boats up slipways and slow technical driving.

Why does my Freelander 2 or Evoque lose four-wheel drive?

These models use an electronically controlled coupling at the rear axle. A clogged coupling filter, a failed pump or a control module fault can leave the vehicle in front-wheel drive with a 4x4 warning. Regular servicing of the coupling helps prevent this.

What should I send to order drivetrain parts?

The VIN, model, year and engine, and the gearbox or transfer case type if you know it. Photos of any labels or casting numbers on the unit help confirm the part.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
