Understanding Camshafts

The camshaft opens and closes the engine's valves in time with the pistons. On the Td5, the camshaft also drives the electronic unit injectors through rockers, so cam lobe wear there affects fuelling as well as valve timing. V6 and V8 Land Rover engines have several camshafts per engine, driven by belts or chains depending on the engine family.

Camshafts rarely fail on their own. Wear usually follows poor lubrication, a timing drive failure, or a worn follower or rocker that has damaged the lobe it runs on.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover camshafts

What causes camshaft wear on a Land Rover?

The most common causes are oil starvation, oil left in too long, and worn followers or rockers that no longer spread the load evenly across the lobe. A timing belt or chain failure can also break or bend a camshaft when the valves hit the pistons. When a worn cam is found, replace or inspect the followers it runs against at the same time.

Can I replace just one camshaft on a V6 or V8 Land Rover engine?

It is possible if only one camshaft is damaged, but inspect the others and every follower before deciding. If the damage came from oil starvation, the same conditions affected the whole top end. Always set the timing with the correct locking tools for your engine, because V6 and V8 engines are unforgiving of a small timing error.

Do Td5 camshaft problems affect the injectors?

Yes. On the Td5 the camshaft operates the unit injectors through rockers, so worn injector lobes or rockers can cause poor running and uneven fuelling. When diagnosing a rough-running Td5, check the injector rockers and cam lobes as well as the injectors and wiring.

What should I replace along with a Land Rover camshaft?

At minimum, fit new followers or lifters for that camshaft, a fresh oil and filter, and any seals or gaskets you disturb, such as the rocker cover gasket. If the timing belt or chain has to come off, it usually makes sense to renew the timing kit while access is easy.
