Understanding Torque Converter
The torque converter is a fluid coupling between the engine and an automatic gearbox. It lets the vehicle stop in gear without stalling and multiplies torque when pulling away. A lock-up clutch inside it connects the engine directly to the gearbox at cruising speeds to improve efficiency.
On heavy Land Rovers that tow, the torque converter works hard and generates heat. A worn lock-up clutch can cause shudder at steady speeds, and debris from a failing converter contaminates the whole gearbox.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover torque converter
Is the torque converter the cause of my gearbox shudder?
Shudder at steady speeds often points to the lock-up clutch in the converter, but old fluid and valve body problems can cause similar symptoms. A diagnosis with fault codes and fluid condition is the first step.
Should I flush the gearbox when replacing a torque converter?
Yes. A failing converter spreads debris through the fluid, cooler and valve body. Flush or replace the gearbox cooler and fit fresh fluid and a filter where possible.
Can I reuse the torque converter with a replacement gearbox?
It is not recommended if the old gearbox failed internally, because debris may be trapped in the converter. Fit a converter matched to the replacement gearbox.
What should I send to order a torque converter?
The VIN, engine code and gearbox type or code.
