Understanding Pistons
Pistons move up and down in the cylinders, sealing combustion pressure with their rings and passing the force to the crankshaft through the connecting rods. In turbodiesel Land Rovers the pistons run under high heat and pressure, and many are cooled by oil jets underneath.
Pistons are usually replaced as part of an engine rebuild, after overheating, or when dust has worn the bores and rings. A split or badly fitted air filter on dusty roads can wear rings and bores surprisingly quickly.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover pistons
What damages pistons in a Land Rover diesel?
Overheating, a leaking injector washing fuel onto the piston crown, dust getting past the air filter, and oil starvation are the most common causes. On an engine that has overheated, check the pistons and the cylinder head together, since both are often affected.
Should I replace all the pistons or just the damaged one?
On a proper rebuild, replace the full set so weights and ring wear are consistent. If only one piston was damaged by a specific fault, such as a leaking injector, a single replacement is possible, but measure the other bores and rings before closing the engine up.
Do I need oversize pistons for my Land Rover rebuild?
Only if the bores have been machined. The machine shop will measure the bores and tell you whether standard pistons will do or the block needs boring, and which size to order. Some engines use liners, so the approach differs by engine family.
What else should I replace with Land Rover pistons?
Piston rings, gudgeon pins and clips if not supplied, big-end bearings, a full gasket set, and new oil and filter. Clean the oil cooler and check the oil jets if the engine has them.
