Understanding Exhaust
The exhaust system carries gases away from the engine, cleans them and quietens the noise. On a Land Rover it runs from the exhaust manifold and turbocharger through the downpipe, emissions equipment, pipes and silencers to the tailpipe. Many newer diesels add a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), and some have AdBlue systems as well.
Off-road driving exposes the exhaust to rocks, mud and water, and on older vehicles, especially coastal ones, rust attacks pipes, clamps and hangers. Emissions parts are sensor-controlled, so exhaust faults often appear as engine warning lights rather than noise.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover exhaust
Why is my Land Rover exhaust blowing?
The usual causes are a failed gasket at the manifold or downpipe, a split flexi joint, a rusted pipe or silencer, or a loose clamp. A workshop can find the leak quickly with the vehicle on a lift.
Can I replace only part of the exhaust?
Yes. Land Rover exhausts are made in sections, so you can replace just the damaged section. Fit new gaskets, clamps and rubber mounts at the joints you disturb.
Are exhaust fumes in the cabin dangerous?
Yes. Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide. If you smell fumes inside the vehicle, have the exhaust and door and tailgate seals checked as soon as possible.
What do I need to order Land Rover exhaust parts?
The VIN, the engine code and which section you need. Exhausts differ between engines and emission standards on the same model, and Defenders differ by wheelbase.
