Understanding Taillights

Tail light clusters combine the rear position lamps, brake lights, indicators and often the reversing and rear fog lights. Classic Defenders use small separate lamps low on the rear body, while newer Land Rovers use large LED clusters that wrap around the body or tailgate.

Rear lamps are easily damaged in parking knocks and off-road, and modern LED units are replaced as a complete assembly when a section fails.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover taillights

Can a failed LED tail light be repaired?

Most LED tail lights are sealed units, so the whole assembly is replaced. Before buying, check the connector and wiring for corrosion, as that can mimic a failed unit.

Are left and right tail lights the same?

No. They are mirror images and must be ordered by side. Some models also have separate lamps on the body and on the tailgate.

Why is water getting into my tail light?

A perished seal, a crack or a loose fitting lets water in. Replace the seal or unit, and check that the lamp is tightened evenly.

What do I need to order a tail light?

The VIN, the side, and whether the lamp is mounted on the body or tailgate. Pre- and post-facelift versions of the same model often use different lamps.
