Understanding Alternator

The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. It is driven by the auxiliary belt. On some Land Rover diesels, such as the Td5, the brake vacuum pump is mounted on the back of the alternator, so an alternator job may involve the vacuum pump as well.

Alternators wear out through brushes, bearings, regulators and pulleys. Dust and water from off-road driving can speed up bearing wear, and a worn freewheel pulley can cause noise and belt problems even when the alternator itself still charges.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover alternator

How do I test whether my Land Rover alternator is charging?

With a multimeter, measure battery voltage with the engine off and again with it running and some electrical loads switched on. The voltage should rise when the engine runs. Many workshops can also run a charging system test in a few minutes.

Should I buy a new, used or remanufactured alternator?

A remanufactured unit with new bearings, brushes and regulator is a good balance of cost and reliability. A used unit is the cheapest option but its remaining life is unknown. Whichever you choose, match the output rating and pulley type.

Should I replace the auxiliary belt with the alternator?

It is sensible, along with checking the belt tensioner and idler pulleys. A worn belt or tensioner can damage a new alternator's pulley.

What do I need to order a Land Rover alternator?

Send the VIN and engine code. Output, mounting, pulley and connector can vary on the same engine, depending on equipment such as air conditioning or extra electrical loads.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
