Understanding Fuel Pumps
Land Rovers use different combinations of fuel pumps. Most have an electric pump in the tank that sends fuel forward. The 300Tdi has a mechanical lift pump on the engine feeding its injection pump. The Td5 relies on its in-tank pump to supply the unit injectors. Common-rail diesels such as the V6 diesels and Ingenium engines add an engine-driven high-pressure pump that generates the very high pressure the injectors need.
High-pressure pumps are expensive and can be damaged by contaminated fuel, and a failing in-tank pump often shows up as hard starting or cutting out under load.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover fuel pumps
Is it the in-tank pump or the high-pressure pump?
Measure the low-pressure supply first. If the in-tank pump delivers the correct pressure but rail pressure is low, the high-pressure pump, a regulator or injector leak-off may be at fault. A diagnostic tool with live data helps separate them.
Why is replacing a high-pressure pump expensive?
The pump itself is costly, and if it has shed metal, the injectors, fuel rail and lines may be contaminated too and need replacing or cleaning.
Should I replace the fuel filter with the pump?
Yes. Always fit a new filter with a new pump, and find out why the old pump failed.
What should I send to order a fuel pump?
The VIN, engine code and whether you need the in-tank pump, lift pump or high-pressure pump.
