Parts commonly needed for the Freelander 2

Freelander 2 parts needs centre on the rear driveline: rear differentials (ideally rebuilt with heavy-duty bearings), Haldex pumps and couplings, plus propshaft bearings. Timing belt kits, intercooler hoses, turbochargers and EGR parts are the common engine orders for the 2.2 TD4 and SD4. Front and rear wheel bearings, suspension bushes and brake parts are routine. Tell us which engine you have and the model year, because the Haldex unit changed during production. When a rear differential is replaced, specialists recommend also dealing with the Haldex unit, because fitting a new differential to a worn coupling can lead to a repeat failure. Ask us to quote both together.

About the Freelander 2

Land Rover launched the Freelander 2 in South Africa in April 2007 with a media drive into the Kalahari. The launch engines were the 3.2 i6, a transversely mounted Volvo-built straight-six petrol, and the 2.2 TD4 common-rail turbodiesel with a six-speed automatic. The more powerful 2.2 SD4 followed, and the thirsty i6 was eventually replaced by the Si4 turbo petrol. Unlike the Freelander 1, the Freelander 2 has Terrain Response and hill descent control, but its four-wheel drive still relies on a Haldex coupling that feeds torque to the rear differential. That coupling and the rear differential are the parts most Freelander 2 owners eventually meet. Early models developed a whine or drone from worn rear differential pinion bearings, and a failing Haldex pump can leave the car in front-wheel drive with a traction warning. The 2.2 diesel uses a timing belt, so a service history matters when buying. Because every local Freelander 2 is now more than a decade old, owners are pricing repairs carefully and often consider reconditioned driveline parts. Give us your VIN and engine when you ask for a quote.

Known Freelander 2 problems

The faults owners and specialists report most often on this generation, and where to look for the parts involved.

Rear differential pinion bearing whine

A whine, hum or drone from the rear is a common fault on pre-2011 Freelander 2s. Land Rover issued a technical bulletin (SSM46477) describing pinion tail bearing spalling, and UK specialist K Motors says the bearing was over-tightened at manufacture. Rule out a rear wheel bearing first.

Differentials for sale

Haldex coupling pump failure

A faulty Haldex pump shows as a traction control light and a "Traction Reduced" message, dropping the car to front-wheel drive. Read the fault codes before buying parts.

Transfer Case Parts

2.2 diesel timing belt

The 2.2 diesel uses a timing belt that must be replaced at its scheduled interval to avoid serious engine damage.

Timing Belts

Split intercooler hose and loss of power

A split intercooler hose on the diesel loses boost and causes a loss of power.

Engine Parts

Power steering faults

Power steering reservoirs, pumps and occasionally racks are replaced on high-mileage Freelander 2s.

Suspension

Faulty fuel gauge

Wiring connections to the in-tank fuel pump and the fuel sender units can fail, giving a wrong fuel gauge reading.

Electrical

Keeping a Freelander 2 running

On the Freelander 2, keep an eye on the Haldex coupling, because a failing pump drops the car into front-wheel drive with a traction warning. Listen for a whine or drone from the rear, which on pre-2011 cars often means worn rear differential pinion bearings. The 2.2 TD4 and SD4 diesels use a timing belt that must be replaced on schedule. Intercooler hoses, power steering components and wheel bearings are other common repairs.

Freelander 2 questions

Why is there a humming noise from the back of my Freelander 2?

On pre-2011 Freelander 2s a whine, hum or drone from the rear is commonly caused by rear differential pinion bearings that wear early; Land Rover issued a technical bulletin on it. A worn rear wheel bearing can sound very similar, so have it diagnosed before buying a differential.

What does "Traction Reduced" mean on a Freelander 2?

It usually points to the Haldex system that feeds drive to the rear wheels. A failing Haldex pump will illuminate the traction control light and show the message, and the car will drive mostly on the front wheels until it is fixed.
