Understanding Differential Assembly
A differential lets the wheels on the same axle turn at different speeds in corners while still delivering drive. Every four-wheel-drive Land Rover has front and rear differentials, and some also have a centre differential in the transfer case.
Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport and later Range Rovers could be fitted with an electronically controlled locking rear differential, often called the rear e-diff, which uses a motor or clutch pack to lock the rear wheels together for off-road grip. The Freelander 1 is known for problems with its viscous coupling and intermediate reduction drive (IRD), which affect the whole driveline.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover differential assembly
What is the rear e-diff on a Discovery 3 or 4?
It is an optional electronically controlled rear differential that can lock the rear wheels together for traction off-road, managed by Terrain Response. Faults can come from the actuator motor, sensors, wiring or the clutch pack inside.
Should I change differential oil on my Land Rover?
Yes, at the intervals in the service schedule, and sooner after deep water crossings, where water can enter through breathers or seals. Milky diff oil means water contamination.
Can I fit a used differential?
Yes, if it matches the axle, ratio and type. A differential with the wrong ratio will cause serious driveline problems on a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Confirm the ratio from the part number or casting.
What should I send to order a differential?
The VIN, which axle, whether the vehicle has a locking rear diff, and any part number or tag from the old unit.
