Understanding Defender (Classic) Brake Lines

Brake lines carry hydraulic fluid from the master cylinder to each wheel. Rigid metal pipes run along the chassis and body, and flexible rubber hoses connect them to the calipers so the wheels can move with the suspension and steering.

On classic Defenders and older Discoverys, metal brake pipes along the chassis can corrode badly, especially on vehicles from the coast. Lifted Defenders need longer flexible hoses so the hoses are not stretched when the axles drop on full articulation.

Common Questions About Defender (Classic) brake lines

How often should Land Rover brake hoses be replaced?

There is no single interval, but rubber hoses age and should be inspected at every service. Replace any hose that is cracked, swollen or leaking. Vehicles used off-road should be checked more often for damage from rocks and branches.

Do I need longer brake hoses after a suspension lift?

Often yes. With a lift, the axle can drop further than the standard hose allows, which can stretch or tear it. Check hose slack at full droop with the wheels turned, and fit extended hoses if needed.

Can corroded brake pipes be repaired?

Replace corroded sections rather than patching them. Use the correct pipe material and fittings, bend the pipe to follow the original route, and bleed the system properly afterwards.

What should I do after replacing a brake line?

Bleed the brakes to remove all air from the system. On models with ABS, some bleeding procedures require a diagnostic tool to cycle the ABS pump. Test the pedal feel before driving.
