Understanding Defender (Classic) Resonator

A resonator is a small exhaust box tuned to cancel specific sound frequencies, reducing drone at steady speeds. It is often part of an intermediate pipe section rather than a separate part.

Like silencers, resonators rust from the inside and can develop internal rattles when baffles break loose.

Common Questions About Defender (Classic) resonator

Can I remove the resonator?

The vehicle will run, but cabin drone usually increases and noise levels may become a roadworthy issue. Replacing a failed resonator keeps the exhaust as designed.

Is the resonator a separate part?

On many Land Rovers it is welded into an intermediate pipe, so you replace the pipe section complete with the resonator.

What causes a resonator to rattle?

Internal baffles can break loose as the box rusts. Rattles can also come from a nearby heat shield, so check those first.

What do I need to order a resonator?

The VIN, engine code and a photo of the section, so it can be matched to the right pipe.

Not sure which part fits?

Share your VIN or engine code and the parts team will check the correct part for your Defender (Classic).
