Understanding Discovery 2 Filters
Filters keep dirt out of the engine, fuel system and cabin. A Land Rover service normally includes the oil filter, and at set intervals the air filter, diesel fuel filter and cabin (pollen) filter.
South African conditions are hard on filters. Gravel roads and dry seasons load air filters with dust, and diesel fuel filters protect expensive injectors and high-pressure pumps from water and contamination. Shorten filter intervals if you regularly drive on dirt roads.

How often should I change the air filter on a Land Rover used on gravel roads?
Follow the service schedule as a minimum, but inspect the air filter much more often if you drive on dirt roads. Dust is one of the fastest ways to wear an engine, so replace a dirty filter rather than knocking it clean, and check the airbox seal while you are there.
Why does my Land Rover diesel fuel filter matter so much?
Modern common-rail and unit-injector diesels use very fine tolerances. Water or dirt that gets past a tired fuel filter can damage injectors and the high-pressure pump. Drain any water trap if your filter has one, and replace the filter at the specified interval or sooner if you suspect bad fuel.
Do I need an original Land Rover filter?
You need a filter that meets the original specification for size, flow and filtration. Quality aftermarket filters are widely used. Avoid unbranded filters with poor seals or media, especially for oil and diesel fuel.
