Understanding Discovery 4 Gear Shifter
Land Rovers use several types of gear selector. Classic Defenders and Discovery 1 and 2 have a manual gear lever or automatic selector, plus a separate transfer lever for high and low range. Discovery 3, early Discovery 4 and the first Range Rover Sport use an automatic gear lever, with high and low range selected by a switch. Several later models, such as the first-generation Evoque and later Discovery 4, use a rotary selector that rises from the centre console when the engine starts.
Electronic selectors can fail to rise, lose their illumination or refuse to select a gear, and manual levers wear their bushes and gaiters.

Common Questions About Discovery 4 gear shifter
Why won't my rotary gear selector rise?
Possible causes include a faulty selector unit, a low battery, spilled liquid or debris in the mechanism, or a fault in the gearbox or body electronics. Read the fault codes before replacing the selector.
Why does my Defender gear lever feel sloppy?
Worn gear lever bushes and linkage are the usual cause. Bush kits are inexpensive and restore a firmer shift.
Does a replacement electronic selector need coding?
Some do. Check with your workshop whether programming is needed for your model.
What should I send to order a gear selector?
The VIN, gearbox type, and whether you need the main selector, a transfer lever, or a knob or gaiter.
