Understanding Discovery 5 Transmission Pump
The oil pump in an automatic gearbox supplies the pressure that engages clutches, lubricates gears and circulates fluid through the cooler. It is usually driven by the torque converter hub at the front of the gearbox.
A worn pump, damaged bush or leaking pump seal reduces pressure. The result is slipping, delayed engagement and overheating, particularly when the fluid is hot after a long drive or while towing.

Common Questions About Discovery 5 transmission pump
Can I replace the gearbox pump without removing the gearbox?
Usually not. The pump sits at the front of the gearbox behind the torque converter, so the gearbox has to come out.
Is a leak between the engine and gearbox always the pump seal?
No. It can also be the engine's rear main seal. Check the colour and smell of the fluid: gearbox fluid is usually red or amber, engine oil is brown or black.
Should other parts be replaced with the pump?
Replace the front pump seal, check the torque converter hub for wear, and fit fresh fluid and a filter where possible.
What should I send to order a transmission pump?
The VIN and the gearbox code from the identification label.
