Understanding Discovery Sport Oxygen Sensors

Oxygen sensors, also called lambda sensors, measure how much oxygen is left in the exhaust so the engine control unit can adjust the fuel mixture. Petrol Land Rovers have sensors before and after the catalytic converter, and V6 and V8 engines have sensors for each bank. Diesels use related exhaust gas sensors, including exhaust temperature sensors and, on newer engines with AdBlue, NOx sensors.

Sensors age with heat and can be contaminated by oil or coolant burning in the engine.

Common Questions About Discovery Sport oxygen sensors

Which oxygen sensor do I need?

The fault code tells you which sensor has a problem: upstream or downstream, and on V6 and V8 engines, which bank. Order by position and send the VIN, as sensors differ by engine.

Can a faulty oxygen sensor damage the engine?

It will not usually cause direct damage, but a wrong fuel mixture increases fuel use and can overheat the catalytic converter over time.

Should I use anti-seize on a new oxygen sensor?

Only a sensor-safe anti-seize, and only on the threads. Many new sensors come with it already applied. Keep it off the sensor tip.

Are NOx sensors the same as oxygen sensors?

No. NOx sensors measure nitrogen oxides for AdBlue systems on newer diesels. They are separate parts, often with their own control module.
