Understanding Freelander 1 Heater Cores
The heater core, or heater matrix, is a small radiator behind the dashboard that warms the cabin using hot engine coolant. On older, simpler models such as the classic Defender the heater is relatively accessible, while on newer models it sits deep inside the dashboard, making replacement a big labour job.
A leaking heater core can soak the carpets, mist the windscreen and leave a sweet coolant smell in the cabin.

Common Questions About Freelander 1 heater cores
How do I know if my heater core is leaking?
Damp carpets, a sweet smell and a misty windscreen are strong signs. A cooling system pressure test can confirm it.
Why is replacing a heater core so expensive?
On many modern Land Rovers the heater core is inside the dashboard, so much of the dashboard has to be removed. The part may be affordable, but labour is significant.
Could no heat be something other than the heater core?
Yes. A thermostat stuck open, airlocks in the cooling system, a failed heater valve or blend flap motor, or low coolant can all reduce heat.
What should I send to order a heater core?
The VIN and whether the vehicle is left- or right-hand drive and has single or dual-zone climate control.
