Understanding Freelander 1 Pressure Plate

The pressure plate, or clutch cover, clamps the clutch disc against the flywheel using a diaphragm spring. When you press the pedal, the release bearing pushes on the diaphragm to free the disc. The clutch is operated hydraulically by a master and slave cylinder on most manual Land Rovers.

Worn diaphragm fingers, heat damage and a failing release bearing are common reasons for replacement, and the slave cylinder is often replaced at the same time.

Common Questions About Freelander 1 pressure plate

Is it the pressure plate or the release bearing?

A noise that appears or changes when you press the clutch pedal usually points to the release bearing. Slip or judder points more to the plate or disc. Both are normally replaced together as a kit.

Should I replace the slave cylinder with the clutch?

On many Land Rovers, particularly those with a concentric slave cylinder inside the bell housing, it is sensible to replace it while the gearbox is out.

Why is my clutch pedal soft or sinking?

Air in the hydraulic system, or a leaking master or slave cylinder, is the usual cause. Check the fluid level and look for leaks.

What should I send to order a pressure plate?

The VIN, engine code and gearbox type.
