Understanding Range Rover (L322) Engine Blocks
The engine block is the main casting that holds the cylinders, crankshaft and coolant jackets. A bare block is only the casting, a short block adds the crankshaft, rods and pistons, and a long block usually includes the cylinder head as well.
Blocks are replaced after major failures such as a rod through the side of the block, a cracked water jacket, or cylinder liner problems. The older aluminium Rover V8 petrol engines in early Discoverys and Range Rovers were known for liner problems, while modern diesels usually need a block only after a serious bottom-end failure.

Common Questions About Range Rover (L322) engine blocks
What is the difference between a short block and a long block?
A short block is the block with crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons installed. A long block adds the cylinder head and usually the valve train. A complete engine goes further and includes items such as the manifolds, sensors and ancillaries. Choose based on how much of your old engine is still usable.
Can a cracked engine block be repaired?
Some external cracks can be stitched or welded by a specialist, but cracks into cylinders, bearing housings or oil galleries usually mean a replacement block or complete engine. Get the block inspected before spending money on other parts.
Will a block from a different Land Rover model fit my engine?
Only if it is the same engine family and a compatible version. Mounting points, sensor positions and oil or coolant connections can change between versions of the same engine. Match on the engine code and number rather than the model it came from.
What should I check on a used Land Rover engine block?
Ask for the engine number, confirm the bores and bearing housings are undamaged, and check for signs of overheating or cracks. A block that has been through a machine shop with measurements recorded is a safer buy.
