Understanding Range Rover (L405) Air Springs

Air springs are rubber bellows that hold pressurised air and carry the weight of the vehicle. At the front, Land Rovers usually use an air strut that combines the air spring with a damper. At the rear, the air spring may be combined with the damper or mounted separately, depending on the model.

The rubber perishes with age, heat and UV, and dust between the folds of the bellows speeds up wear. Small cracks cause slow leaks, and a burst spring drops that corner onto its bump stop.

Common Questions About Range Rover (L405) air springs

Should I replace air springs in pairs?

Yes, replace both on the same axle. Air springs age together, so when one fails the other is often close behind, and a matching pair keeps the ride even.

How can I confirm an air spring is leaking?

Raise the vehicle to its highest setting, then spray soapy water onto the bellows and the air line fitting at the top. Bubbles show the leak. A vehicle that sinks at one corner overnight also points strongly to that spring or its line.

What should I replace with a front air strut?

Check the top mount, the air line and its fitting. Some workshops also inspect the height sensor for that corner at the same time, since a faulty sensor can make a new strut behave oddly.

Do new air springs need to be set up?

After fitting, the suspension should be calibrated to the correct ride heights with a diagnostic tool, especially if height sensors or arms have been disturbed.
