Understanding Range Rover (L405) Wiring Harness
Wiring harnesses are the bundles of wires and connectors that link every sensor, module and component. Land Rover harnesses include engine harnesses, body looms, door and tailgate harnesses, and on diesels, injector harnesses.
The Td5 has a well-known problem: engine oil can leak past the injector harness connector in the cylinder head and wick along the wires into the engine ECU connector, causing running faults and damaging the ECU. Other common harness faults include broken wires in tailgate and door hinges, and rodent damage.

Common Questions About Range Rover (L405) wiring harness
How do I fix oil in the Td5 wiring harness?
Replace the injector harness and its seal where it passes through the head, and clean or replace the external engine harness if oil has wicked into it. Check the ECU connector for oil and clean it with a suitable contact cleaner. If oil has reached the ECU, it may also need attention.
Can a wiring harness be repaired instead of replaced?
A few broken wires can be repaired with proper crimped and sealed joints. If the damage is widespread, oil-soaked or in a critical engine harness, replacement is more reliable.
Why do my tailgate electrics keep failing?
Wires that pass through the tailgate hinge area flex every time it opens and can break inside their insulation. Check the loom where it enters the tailgate before replacing locks, cameras or lights.
How can I stop rodents chewing my wiring?
Keep the engine bay clean, avoid parking near food sources, and consider rodent-deterrent tape on vulnerable harnesses. Check wiring if the vehicle has stood for a long time.
