Understanding Range Rover (L405) Flywheel
The flywheel is bolted to the back of the crankshaft. On manual vehicles, it provides the friction surface for the clutch and carries the starter ring gear. Many modern diesels use a dual-mass flywheel (DMF), which has two halves joined by springs to absorb engine vibration, while older engines use a solid flywheel.
Dual-mass flywheels wear out, and the springs and bearings inside lose their damping. On automatic vehicles, a thinner flexplate replaces the flywheel and connects the crankshaft to the torque converter.

Common Questions About Range Rover (L405) flywheel
How do I know if my dual-mass flywheel is worn?
A workshop can measure the free play and rock between the two halves against the manufacturer's limits. Rattles at idle and judder when pulling away are common symptoms.
Can I fit a solid flywheel instead of a dual-mass flywheel?
Conversion kits exist for some engines. They remove the dual-mass flywheel's wear parts but usually increase vibration and gearbox noise. Discuss the trade-off with a specialist first.
Can a flywheel be skimmed?
A solid flywheel can often be skimmed if it is within limits. Dual-mass flywheels generally should not be skimmed.
What should I send to order a flywheel?
The VIN, engine code and whether the vehicle is manual or automatic.
