Understanding Range Rover Sport (L461) Brake Rotors
Brake discs, also called rotors, are the steel discs that turn with the wheels and are clamped by the pads. Front discs on Land Rovers are vented to shed heat. On Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and the first Range Rover Sport, the centre of the rear disc also forms a small drum for the parking brake shoes.
Discs wear thinner with every set of pads and can develop uneven thickness from heat, which causes judder. Coastal humidity also rusts the disc faces and edges on vehicles that stand for a while.

Common Questions About Range Rover Sport (L461) brake rotors
Are my brake discs warped or just dirty?
True warping is less common than uneven thickness caused by pad material building up or by heat. Either way, the result is judder under braking. A workshop can measure disc thickness variation and run-out. Skimming is possible if the disc stays above minimum thickness, but replacement is often the better choice on heavy vehicles.
Should I replace Land Rover brake discs with every pad change?
Not necessarily. Measure the disc, and replace it if it is at or near the minimum thickness, scored or causing judder. Always replace discs in axle pairs.
Why are Discovery 3 and 4 rear discs different?
Their rear discs have a drum section in the middle for the parking brake shoes. When replacing these discs, inspect the parking brake shoes and hardware, and make sure the electronic parking brake module is released correctly before removing them.
What size discs does my Land Rover need?
It depends on the model, engine and brake package. Some models were fitted with larger discs on certain engines. Send the VIN, or measure the disc diameter, so the right discs are matched.
