Understanding Defender (Classic) Crankshafts
The crankshaft turns the up-and-down movement of the pistons into rotation that drives the gearbox. It runs in main bearings and carries the connecting rods on big-end bearings, all fed by pressurised oil.
On Land Rover's V6 diesels, the 2.7 and 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 fitted to Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport, crankshaft and bearing failures are a well-known and expensive problem among owners and independent specialists. Once a crank has spun a bearing or cracked, the usual repair is a replacement crankshaft or a complete engine rather than a regrind.

Common Questions About Defender (Classic) crankshafts
Why do Land Rover V6 diesel crankshafts fail?
Failures on the 2.7 and 3.0 V6 diesels are usually traced to bearing damage: a bearing loses its oil film, spins in its housing and destroys the crank journal. Oil quality, extended service intervals and oil dilution from interrupted DPF regenerations are commonly blamed. Keeping to the correct oil specification and changing it on time is the best prevention.
Can a damaged Land Rover crankshaft be reground?
Sometimes. A crank with light scoring can be reground and fitted with undersize bearings by a good machine shop. A crank that has spun a bearing badly, overheated or cracked should be replaced. On V6 diesels, check the block's bearing housings and the connecting rods too, as they are often damaged in the same failure.
Is it better to replace the crankshaft or the whole engine?
If the failure has sent metal through the oil system, the turbo, oil pump and oil cooler may be contaminated as well. In that case a complete replacement engine is often simpler and more predictable than a crankshaft repair. Ask for quotes on both before deciding.
What do I need to order a Land Rover crankshaft?
Send the VIN and the engine number. V6 and V8 diesel cranks differ between engine versions, so the model name alone is not enough. If you are rebuilding, also ask about main and big-end bearings, a crank sensor and the rear main seal.
