Understanding Defender (Classic) Valves
Inlet valves let air into each cylinder and exhaust valves let spent gases out. They seal against valve seats in the cylinder head and are closed by valve springs.
On Land Rover engines, valves are most often replaced during a head overhaul, after a timing belt or chain failure has let pistons strike them, or when carbon and wear stop them sealing. Stem seals are a common small job when an engine smokes on start-up.

Common Questions About Defender (Classic) valves
Will a snapped timing belt bend the valves on my Land Rover?
On most Land Rover diesels, yes. They are interference engines, which means the valves and pistons share space, so a broken belt or jumped chain usually bends valves and can damage pistons. Replace timing belts on schedule and investigate chain rattle promptly.
Should I replace valve stem seals when doing a head job?
Yes. Stem seals are cheap and harden with age. Any time the head is off, fit new stem seals and have the valves and seats checked or re-cut.
Can I replace one valve or should I do a set?
A single bent valve can be replaced, but the guide and seat must be checked and the valve lapped in. If the head has several bent valves or high mileage, a full valve job gives a more reliable result.
What information do I need to order Land Rover engine valves?
The engine code, whether you need inlet or exhaust valves, and the quantity. If the head has been machined, tell the supplier whether oversize stems or seats were used.
