What is specific to the Defender (Classic)

Diesel Defender (Classic) derivatives use the 2.5 300Tdi turbodiesel, 2.5 Td5 five-cylinder turbodiesel, 2.4 TDCi Puma turbodiesel and 2.2 TDCi Puma turbodiesel. Their pumps, injectors and filters are not shared with the petrol engines.

Petrol derivatives use the 2.8i straight-six petrol (South African derivative).

Have this ready when you enquire

  • The 17-character VIN from your licence document, which identifies your exact Defender 90 / 110 / 130 (sold here 1990s–2016) and its build.
  • The engine code or number, because this model was sold with the 2.5 300Tdi turbodiesel, 2.5 Td5 five-cylinder turbodiesel, 2.8i straight-six petrol (South African derivative) (BMW M52), 2.4 TDCi Puma turbodiesel and 2.2 TDCi Puma turbodiesel.
  • A photo of the old part or its part number, if you can get to it.

Known Defender (Classic) fuel system faults

Td5 fuel pressure regulator leak

The regulator at the rear of the head leaks diesel down the side of the engine, often mistaken for an oil leak. It is replaced with an improved gasket.

Fuel System

Puma 2.4 EGR and injector return pipes

EGR valve carbon build-up and hardened, cracked injector leak-off pipes are pattern faults on the 2.4 TDCi and can mimic far more expensive fuel pump problems.

EGR Valve

Parts commonly needed for the Defender (Classic)

On Td5 vehicles the injector loom, fuel pressure regulator and cylinder heads are common replacements, while Puma owners look for EGR valves, glow plug modules and injector leak-off pipes.

Defender (Classic) fuel system questions

What should I do if I put petrol in my diesel Land Rover?

Do not start the engine. If you have already driven, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Have the tank drained and the system flushed. Running a modern diesel on petrol can damage the high-pressure pump and injectors.

How do I bleed air out of my diesel fuel system?

Many modern Land Rovers bleed themselves when the ignition is cycled several times. Older engines may need manual priming. Follow the procedure for your engine, and fix the cause of the air leak.
