What is specific to the Defender (L663)

The Defender (L663) was sold in South Africa with 4 different engines. Internal parts, gaskets, timing components and sensors are specific to each, so the engine code decides the part before anything else.

Have this ready when you enquire

  • The 17-character VIN from your licence document, which identifies your exact L663 (sold here 2020–present) and its build.
  • The engine code or number, because this model was sold with the D240 2.0 four-cylinder turbodiesel (Ingenium), P300 2.0 four-cylinder turbo petrol (Ingenium), P400 3.0 six-cylinder turbo petrol mild hybrid (Ingenium) and D300 3.0 six-cylinder turbodiesel.
  • A photo of the old part or its part number, if you can get to it.
Engine Code / family Fuel

P300 2.0 four-cylinder turbo petrol Ingenium Petrol
P400 3.0 six-cylinder turbo petrol mild hybrid Ingenium Petrol hybrid

Known Defender (L663) engine parts faults

2.0 Ingenium diesel timing chain wear

Independent JLR specialists report premature timing chain stretch on the 2.0 Ingenium diesel across models including the Defender, linked to oil dilution from incomplete DPF regenerations. A cold-start rattle is the early symptom.

AJ20-D6 idler pulley recall

A 2026 NCC-published recall covers selected Defenders sold from March 2024 to April 2026: the auxiliary drive belt idler pulley can over-rotate and damage the oil pressure and temperature sensor, causing an oil leak. Dealers replace the pulley free of charge.

This is recall work, done free at Land Rover dealers. Check your VIN with a dealer before buying parts for it.

Parts commonly needed for the Defender (L663)

Diesel owners of the 2.0 D240 should budget for timing chain work at higher mileage.

Replacing the whole unit? A complete unit may cost less than rebuilding one on an older Defender (L663). See engines for sale , cylinder heads for sale or turbochargers for sale .

Defender (L663) engine parts questions

How do I know which engine my Land Rover has?

Start with the VIN on your licence disc and in the windscreen corner. The vehicle's registration papers, the service book and the engine number stamped on the block also identify it. Model names alone are not enough: a Discovery 4, for example, came with different diesel and petrol engines, and a Defender could have a 300Tdi, Td5 or Puma diesel depending on its year. Send the VIN with your quote request so the part can be matched to the engine code.

Should I repair my Land Rover engine or replace it with a complete unit?

It depends on what failed. A leaking gasket, a worn timing kit or a faulty injector is a repair job. Bottom-end damage, such as a spun bearing or a broken crankshaft on a V6 diesel, often makes a complete replacement engine more practical than a rebuild, because the block, crank and turbo may all need attention. Get a proper diagnosis first, then compare the cost of a rebuild kit plus machining against a complete engine.
