Understanding Timing Chains

A timing chain links the crankshaft to the camshafts and keeps the valves in step with the pistons. Unlike a belt, a chain is designed to last a long time, but it relies on clean oil and on tensioners and guides that do wear.

In the Land Rover range, the Td5, the Ford-sourced Puma diesels in later classic Defenders, and the Ingenium four-cylinder engines in Evoque, Velar, Discovery Sport, Discovery 5 and the new Defender use timing chains. On the 2.0 Ingenium diesel the chains sit at the gearbox end of the engine, which makes replacement a bigger job than on engines with the chain at the front.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover timing chains

Does a Land Rover timing chain need to be replaced on a schedule?

Most chains have no fixed replacement interval. They are replaced when they stretch or when the tensioner or guides wear. Regular oil changes with the correct oil are the best protection, and any cold-start rattle should be checked rather than ignored.

What happens if a timing chain fails?

If the chain jumps teeth or breaks on an interference engine, the valves can strike the pistons, bending valves and sometimes damaging pistons and the head. A chain repair done early is far cheaper than an engine rebuild afterwards.

Should I replace the chain or a complete timing kit?

Replace the chain, tensioner and guides together, along with any seals and gaskets you disturb. Fitting only a new chain against worn guides shortens its life.

Why is an Ingenium timing chain job more involved?

On the 2.0 Ingenium diesel the timing chains are at the rear of the engine, next to the gearbox. Depending on the model, access can require removing the gearbox or the engine, so labour is a large part of the cost. Get a quote for parts and labour before committing.
