Understanding Discovery Sport Control Arms

Control arms locate the wheels and axles and control their movement. On independent-suspension Land Rovers such as Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover, upper and lower arms with bushes and ball joints do this job. On classic Defenders and Discovery 1 and 2, radius arms locate the front axle and trailing links locate the rear.

The bushes and ball joints in these arms wear before the arms themselves, but on many modern Land Rovers they are pressed in and the arm is sold as a complete unit.

Common Questions About Discovery Sport control arms

Should I replace the complete arm or just the bushes?

On many Discovery and Range Rover arms, the bushes and ball joint are not sold separately, so a complete arm is the practical choice. On classic Defender radius arms, bushes can be pressed out and replaced if the arm itself is straight and not corroded.

Why do front lower arms fail on Discovery 3 and 4?

These are heavy vehicles, and the large bushes in the front lower arms wear with mileage and rough roads. Worn bushes cause knocks and a shimmy under braking. Replace them in pairs to keep the handling even.

Do I need an alignment after replacing control arms?

Yes. New arms change the wheel geometry, so have a four-wheel alignment done. On air-suspension models, tighten the bushes at normal ride height so they are not preloaded.

Are aftermarket radius arms suitable for lifted Defenders?

Cranked or adjustable radius arms are designed to correct caster angle on lifted vehicles. Choose arms matched to your lift height and have the geometry set properly.
