Understanding Discovery Sport Shock Absorbers
Shock absorbers, or dampers, control how quickly the springs compress and rebound. On coil-sprung Land Rovers such as the classic Defender and Discovery 1 and 2, the shock absorber is a separate unit mounted next to the spring. On air-sprung models, the damper is usually built into the air strut at the front and may be separate at the rear.
Corrugated gravel roads heat shock absorbers and wear them quickly, especially on loaded touring vehicles. Worn dampers make a Land Rover wallow, bounce and lose grip on rough surfaces.

Common Questions About Discovery Sport shock absorbers
Should I fit heavy-duty shock absorbers to my Defender?
If you tour on gravel roads with a loaded vehicle, heavier-duty or larger-bodied dampers resist heat better and last longer on corrugations. Match the damper length to your spring height, especially if the vehicle has been lifted.
Should shock absorbers be replaced in pairs?
Yes, always replace both on the same axle so the vehicle handles evenly. Many owners replace all four at once.
Do I need longer shocks after a lift?
Usually yes. A lift increases the distance the axle can travel, and standard-length shocks can top out or limit articulation. Choose shocks designed for the lift height.
What else should I replace with shock absorbers?
Mounting bushes and washers, and on Defenders the shock absorber turrets or brackets if they are corroded or cracked.
