Understanding Freelander 1 Engine Bearings

Engine bearings are thin shells that the crankshaft runs in. Main bearings support the crank in the block, big-end bearings sit between the crank and the connecting rods, and thrust washers control the crank's end-to-end movement. They rely entirely on a film of pressurised oil.

Bearing failure is behind many major Land Rover engine repairs, including the well-known crankshaft failures on the 2.7 and 3.0 V6 diesels. Bearings are always replaced during a rebuild and after any failure that has put metal into the oil.

Common Questions About Freelander 1 engine bearings

What causes engine bearings to fail?

Oil starvation, degraded or diluted oil, contamination from dust or metal particles, and overheating. On diesels that do lots of short trips, fuel dilution from interrupted DPF regenerations can thin the oil. Correct oil and regular changes are the best defence.

Can I replace bearings without removing the crankshaft?

Replacing shells in place is sometimes done as a stop-gap, but it hides the real condition of the crank journals. For a lasting repair, the crank should be removed, measured and reground or replaced as needed.

What does an oversize or undersize bearing mean?

When a crankshaft is reground, its journals get smaller, so thicker bearing shells are needed. These are sold by the amount the crank has been ground. Your machine shop will tell you the size required.

What else should I replace with engine bearings?

Replace the oil pump pickup strainer if it is contaminated, clean or replace the oil cooler, fit a new oil filter, and check the turbo, which shares the same oil supply.
