Understanding Range Rover Sport (L461) Tie Rods

Tie rods and track rod ends connect the steering rack or steering box to the wheels. Independent-suspension Land Rovers use a rack with inner tie rods and outer track rod ends. Classic Defenders and Discovery 1 and 2 use a steering box with a drag link to one wheel and a track rod linking both wheels, with ball joints at each end and a steering damper to soak up kickback.

Off-road use can bend a Defender track rod on a rock, and worn ends cause loose, wandering steering.

Common Questions About Range Rover Sport (L461) tie rods

Why is my Defender steering wobbly at speed?

Steering shimmy on beam-axle Land Rovers usually comes from several worn parts at once: track rod ends, drag link ends, the steering damper, Panhard rod bushes, radius arm bushes or swivel bearings. Check all of them, and balance the wheels, rather than replacing one part at a time.

Should I fit a heavy-duty track rod to my Defender?

If you drive rocky trails, a stronger track rod resists bending. Make sure it has the correct ends and allows the steering to be aligned properly.

Do I need an alignment after replacing a tie rod end?

Yes. The toe setting changes when a tie rod end is replaced, so have the alignment checked straight away to avoid tyre wear.

What should I send to order tie rods?

The VIN or model and year, and whether the vehicle is left- or right-hand drive. For Defenders, mention if the steering has been modified or lifted.
