Understanding Range Rover Sport (L494) Diesel Particulate Filter
A diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps soot from the exhaust. It cleans itself by burning the soot off in a process called regeneration, which needs the exhaust to stay hot for a sustained period, typically during a steady run at speed. Many newer diesel Land Rovers, including the V6 diesels in Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport and the Ingenium engines, are fitted with a DPF.
Vehicles that mostly do short trips often never complete a regeneration, so soot builds up until a warning appears. A pressure sensor measures how blocked the filter is, and faulty sensors or split sensor pipes cause false DPF warnings.

Common Questions About Range Rover Sport (L494) diesel particulate filter
How do I clear a DPF warning on my Land Rover?
Follow the instructions in your owner's handbook, which usually involve driving at a steady speed for a while so the filter can regenerate. If the warning does not clear, a workshop can check the pressure sensor and run a forced regeneration with a diagnostic tool.
Why does my DPF keep blocking?
Short trips are the most common cause. Other causes include a faulty DPF pressure sensor, a sticking EGR valve, leaking injectors, turbo oil leaks and using the wrong engine oil. Fix those first, or a new filter will block too.
Can a blocked DPF be cleaned instead of replaced?
Often yes. Specialist cleaning can restore a filter that is blocked with soot. A filter that is cracked, melted or badly blocked with ash usually needs replacing.
Should I remove the DPF?
Removing emissions equipment is not a proper repair. It can cause warning lights and running problems and may affect insurance and future sale. Clean or replace the filter instead.
